چکیده

Biofilms form rapidly on dental unit waterlines. The specific design of dental units favors bacteria to colonize surfaces and to form biofilm in water supply tubes, including dental unit water line (DUWL). The majority of the organisms in the biofilm are harmless environmental species, but some dental units may harbour opportunistic respiratory pathogens. Microbiological control of dental unit waterline biofilm is extremely significant for patients and dental personnel. Based on the latest scientific literature, this study presents the ways of reducing/controlling microbial contamination of dental treatment water biofilm. The use of disinfectants, flushing and quorum sensing inhibitors are described. Further research to evaluate effectiveness, convenience on a day-to-day basis and economic aspects of various methods is required.

Effects of Hydrogen Peroxide on Dental Unit Biofilms and Treatment Water Contamination

OBJECTIVES To study effects of various concentrations of hydrogen peroxide on mature waterline biofilms and in controlling planktonic (free-floating) organisms in simulated dental treatment water systems; and to study in vitro the effects of 2%, 3%, and 7% hydrogen peroxide on the removal of mature biofilms and inorganic compounds in dental waterlines. METHODS Four units of an automated denta...

Microbial contamination of dental unit waterlines: the scientific argument.

The quality of dental unit water is of considerable importance since patients and dental staff are regularly exposed to water and aerosols generated from the dental unit. The unique feature of dental chair water lines is the capacity for rapid development of a biofilm on the dental water supply lines combined with the generation of potentially contaminated aerosols. The biofilm, which is derive...

Frequency evaluation of Pseudomonas SPP contamination in the dental unit water line system at Mashhad dental school

Background and aim: One of the well-known bacteria in dental unit water contamination is Pseudomonas aueroginosa. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the amount of Pseudomonas aeruginosa species infection in the dental unit water samples of Dental Faculty of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Material and methods: Water samples collected randomly from the turbines of 10% of the ac...

Evaluation of an automated dental unit water system's contamination control protocol.

BACKGROUND This study addresses the efficacy of an automated decontamination protocol using the germicide 'tetra acetyl ethylene diamine (TAED) perborate' (Farmec SpA, Italy). The germicide TAED perborate protocol is used in the Castellini Dental Units fitted with an Autosteril unit (an automated device that can cycle 0.26% TAED perborate solution and sterile water for cleaning the water system...

Effects of iodine in microbial control of dental treatment water.

OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of low levels of iodine constantly present in the dental unit water system on microbial control of dental treatment water and biofilm control. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study used a dental unit water system simulator with eight dental unit waterline systems built to scale and function, each controlled via computer. Each of the eight units was operated indep...
